That movement will be from the steering column itself, very unlikely it's come lose so probably the bearings that have gone.

Do you have coilovers? If so the damper in springs has a little locking plate check that has not come lose. Or mayb. Top mounts lose?

To check your wheel bearing, get a mate to press the footbrake, if the play stops, wheel bearing

To add, wheel bearing will have play top to bottom too, as a general all round play, you need two people to check for play, one to wrestle the wheel and one to see whats moving,

If it's side to side,
-track rod end
-steering rack
-bottom ball joint (but more present top to bottom)
-bottom arm bushes
-trailing arm (or whatever it's called)
-wheel bearing

It is very unlikely that top bushes will show massive play side to side, more likely top to bottom as you pull and psh the top edge of the wheel

Top to bottom play
-bottom ball joint
-lower arm bushes
-strut top bearing
-shock absorber bushes (internal of the shock shown as play in the shaft)
-wheel bearing

As a stupid one, if you have had the top mounts not too long ago, check the strut to hub bolts, very unlikely but might have worked loose, you never know

Sounds stupid but your wheel bolts are still tight?

If they are I would say rack end/ track rod end

Yeh wheels bolts are tight sounds stupid but when stationary theres around 1cm of play in the steering wheel side to side would that be a factor

Could be any of them, if you hit standing water your car is forced in many directions, if you can feel play in the steering wheel, is it free play and then start to steer or does it knock when you turn it further?
