My other section on my iPhone sync is now up to 1.49GB... WTF is it?? I dont have any random bits on via any apps etc. (such as VLC player)

I think, that it might be cached application data, internet history, cookies etc etc.

If you go to settings/safari/clear history, that should get some space back.
Also delete some of those crap social network apps, they cache photo/user information.
