Be careful not to update just yet if you've got a jailbroken phone.

Out of curiosity, can you sync the data onto your computer then upgrade and sync back after a JB?

Yep you can upgrade the firmware and then sync your data back to the iPhone. Just make sure you sync before you upgrade!
