There is lots of land next to our house, no-one uses...

Sometimes the council will sell it if its just a dead space, as means they dont have to spend to look after it.

If you could get planning on it is another story!

well at the moment its a dead space. Once in two or so weeks the grass gets cut down.

You could potentially get a planning there for a house as the land is quite big, but all we would do is put a garage there..

If its big enough for a house I doubt the council will sell it, as its worth more for them to hold on until they decide to give it planning permission and sell it as building land.

Rare the council would build a single house though Cosmo.

Can only ask daymoon. Worse they can do is say no.

Plus, it would be a good idea so no little skanks move next door

I didnt ay they'd build a house, I said they'd hold onto the land until they determine the time is right for more houses to be built in the area, give the land planning permission and then sell it on as building land for much more than its worth and general land.

As far as I know, the council don't apply for permission on their own land simply to sell on.

From experience, they seem to prefer to hang on to worthless land, unless prompted to sell it at face value.

I'd say go for it, you've nothing to loose, though you might want to speak to the local planning department to ask for informal advice as to whether they would be likely to permit development there.

I know around me they kept hold of land, got permission that meant only council housing could be built on it then sold the land onto developers - in a number of different sites.
