I have a iiyama Prolite 22" LCD monitor and the native-res is 1680x1050.

However when I select this res from the Control Panel it makes the desktop to big. I can scoll the desktop to the right and down.

I don't want a stretched picture as I do a lot of photo editing so I need it to display properly.

Is there an auto-fit button on your remote for the monitor, or on your monitor? My samsung auto-sizes to the resolution of the desktop.

There is no Auto-fit on the monitor.

I can select it from the CTRL panel - Settings

and the monitor only has a VGA connection.
