currently running 1280x1024 on 42" plasma.
standing far away is just about ok when using the PC, but close is not.

IF the res is turned right down.. 640x480 say, its good quality.

is there any alternative to not having a small desktop?

you running it on DVI or VGA? Also, is 1280x1024 the standard res for the plasma? usually there around 1024 x 1024/1024 x 768 for 42" plasmas!

So if it isnt the standard res, try running it at the native - should improve it if its the case.

If your running it as VGA and the picture looks like it has noise, then try running the VGA cable away from any AC power supplies, and/or invest in a decent vga cable!

though "is there any alternative to not having a small desktop?" - what do you mean by that mate? alternative to a small desktop would be a larger one

Whats the resolution of the plasma?
Unless you paid a lot of money it'll only be 640x480.

its not about money, its about technology.
Older plasmas where 786 x 432 tthen increased to 852 x 480 (older plasmas are usually this resolution), and most modern ones are atleast 1024x+ for 42" screens to make them compatible for HDTV.

native res is 852 x 480 - i believe, not 100% sure, but it looks like it is.

depending on your graphics card/drivers (support feature etc) you might have to setup a custom resolution, but it should offer you the best picture if you can get it to work

Also has a DVI connector by the looks of it, use that if you can!

edit - btw mate, what do you think of the plasma as a whole? good picture, whats it like to watch telly on? Also how much did you pay?
Look like an alright screen for the money (seen them for 900 quid) and need something for the bedroom
