Ideally you'd want a wireless router. How far is your PS3 from your modem?

Even if it's close, you may as well go wireless now 'cus it's the future to be honest.

What ISP are you with? Are you going through cable or just your normal telephone line?

Once you connect your router up, an ethernet lead will come out of your router into your PC. You can run another ethernet from the router to your PS3 too, or you can connect to the router through wireless.

Each router can normally handle 4 wired devices.

I'd recommend a Linksys router.

0right i see, my provider is Talktalk.

Just normal phone line, my PC doesent evern have a ethernet socket on but i may be buying a newer laptop which obviously has one.

So the router plugs into the pc which then picks up the PS3 wireless and puts it through the modem also connected to the PC.

If i were to buy a wireless modem would i still need to use a router at all, or would the Ps3 link straight upto that. Im assuming wireless modems are more money then buying a router aswell.

thats all you need, plug your phoneline into that and thats it, it acts as a modem and router all in one.

ps3 will pictk the signal up and connecnt simple as that, obviously you should get an ethernet card for your pc if it does not have one, although must be an old pc if it doesnt have ethernet to begin with.

( i presume talk talk let you use your own modem)

I'm not fully aware what you mean by this.

Phone Socket > Wireless Router > PC/Wireless device

You will need wireless cards for your PC + Laptop if you've not already got them.

I currently use the broadband modem they sent me. I assume i can use another modem, i wouldnt know.

If i go with just the router option does my current modem plug into that then the router into my tower or do they not plug into each other at all

yes if you just go for a wireless router your current modem will plug into that and a lead from the router will plug into the ps3, but seriosuly to save your self a headache just get an all in one solution.

The laptop i may be getting has a wireless car in it, i was not entirely sure what a router was tbh, from what i gather a router is only used if i wanted to connect my PS3 online through my PC connection.

A wireless modem would cut this out and my PS3 would link straight to that

i was getting confused with people calling a wireless modem a router and not a wireless modem router all in one.

I couldnt work out if i needed just a router or a modem and router.

But as i said above i se a router is only needed on its own if im connecting through my pc connection. (if that makes sense)

bollocks, people are typing to fast for me and im getting all flustered now.

Ok a router is the same as a router and modem in one, the only difference is you have a built in modem.
The wireless devices like PS3 and laptop search for the router.

If i were to buy just a router, would my modem plug into the wall then from the wall into the wireless router.

My wireless devices would pick up the router which would then connect through the modem

I'm now lost. A router has a built in modem, why the need for anything else to confuse things?

Right so the wireless router plugs into the phone line. This sends wireless signal to all devices (PS3, Laptops, phones) giving internet access. If you feel the need to keep some devices wired rather than wireless, this can still be achieved through the same wireless router.

i didnt think all routers have a modem in them, i thought some were just a router to connect wireless devices to a actual modem connection.

For example linking my PS3 to my pc to use its modem connection.

This is why im getting confused as i didnt know all routers have a modem in them.

After a little looking around i see that you can get routrs without modems in them but these are for cable connection i think.

A router for broadband phone connection has a modem in it.

I think im right in saying this, some 1 correct me if im worng
