I recently renewed the coolant on my corsa (1.2 8v), fine for a few days then today it made a very distinctive slushing sound when I started the engine and subsequently revved up. It soon stopped doing it and drove fine, but I am baffled as to what this sound might be.

Coolant and oil levels are fine. Petrol tank is half full.

Any ideas?

Cheers staggy.

Its been cold but at the time it done it, it was no where near freezing.

I put about 30% coolant in the new mixture which should be able to deal very well with freezing temperatures.

My only other thought is that you may have air in the coolent system if you have only just changed it

yep sounds like an air lock

does the car run hot at all? heaters work ok?

let it tick over with the lid off the coolant bottle, leave it bubbling for a bit

Cheers for the replies guys.

There is a bit of mayo on the oil cap, but I reckon its condensation. I think the head gasket is ok.

My thoughts were air lock too. I did let it run for a bit after the coolant change with heater on but maybe it wasn't enough?

Temp and heater is fine.

Just weird that its happened a few days after the coolant change. Maybe the thermostat didnt open before, and when it finally did released some air into the system?

Ill try running it warm tomorrow with cap off as suggested and see if that cures it.

the coolant won't be freezing if you used the right amount of coolant : water.

the cap off method is basically, warm engine up, take the coolant cap off (slowly, don't cover yourself in hot coolant), then let it bubble over, should get rid of all air bubbles etc.

let cool, put cap back on and wash engine bay (don't want coolant everywhere, not good for paint etc.

this happened on my clio before, it started making a noise like water was trickling or something, so checked around the oil cap, nothing anywhere in the engine bay that shouldnt have been.

On the motorway then, and bang, headgasket went, so be very careful, dont rev it much until you stop hearing it bubble, if it dont stop, probably head gasket
