Hmmm, got my wireless all setup and it works on my laptop - no problem there.
One issue though, if I try and download and large(ish) file on my laptop or stream music or video (Myspace, Youtube etc) it will disconnect after a few seconds it'll then reconnect but it if you try and reload the page it'll just do it again.
I can play a online game like World Of Warcraft on it with no connection problems though 
Any ideas as to what might be the problem? I'm thinking it may be something to do with the port that I.E uses but I don't know much about those things.

check your firewall settings, also check your power settings on your laptop.

Firewall is Zone Alarm and seems to be setup ok? What should I be looking for with regards to laptop power settings? I'm new to laptop ownerage

check what settings its on, sometimes if youve got power saving set to on it can cut certain things out when its no plugged into the mains, loads of options to choose from so just look through them!

If you download a say 2gb file from a torrent client or whatever your computer will allocate 2gb of space saved for the download. If theres not enough space the download will trip off.
If its not jus that do you have download limits on your ISP?
Do you have IE7? Have you tried flushing the DNS? >> Go to Start \ Run \ type cmd
hit return
In the command prompt type ipconfig /flushdns
hit return
Try IE again.
Also have you tried running IE7 withou addons? Start \ Programs \ accessories \ system tools \ internet explorer (no addons)
How strongs your wireless signal strengh?
Have you ran a spyware remover recently?

Some providers cut you off if using certain torrent clients.

yes they block the default ports used by torrent clients, just change your port and test it is getting out.
if you use utorrent you can encrypt it but the ISPs can still find out what your doing.

I don't use torrents (on desktop or laptop) - I use newsgroups on my desktop sometimes but not my lappy - so I'm not hitting any download limits that my ISP may of imposed.
The wireless signal is very strong - 5 bars out of 5.
I've not ran a spyware remover as I only formatted it the other day (when I got it from a mate) and started a fresh install, all I've got on there at the mo is AVG, Zone Alarm, World Of Warcraft, Windows XP is all up to date as are all the AVG and ZA definitions - when I updated Windows it was fine, but if I try and update AVG it takes ages as it keeps disconnecting and resuming, same if I try and download any size of file over 5MB I'd say (so much so that I've installed a download manager for now).
I'll try and fluch the DNS but like I say it's a fresh install last week so I'm doubting it'll make any improvements

flushing dns wont sort it, sounds like something interfereing with your wireless, try changing the wifi channel on your wireless point and the laptop.
not sure if youve tried this, but have you tried plugging in a fixed network cable and downloading to see if thats ok?
also the bars may show full but that doesnt mean somethings not interfering with it

Not tried hard wiring it - will give that a go later (off to bed now!), assuming that works ok how do I go about switching channles on the router/wifi?

also check you have the latest drivers for your onboard wireless.

Steve - yes I do, what should I be looking for (the instructions are PROPER SHIT though!)

instructions on how to change the wireless channel, usually involves you logging into your router via a webrowser then changing the channel from the list in there
