Heise Online, a German IT website, is reporting that during a press conference, representatives from Pioneer announced that Universal will break their exclusivity agreement with HD DVD. This would allow Universal, the only large studio exclusively supporting HD DVD, to freely distribute their movies on Blu-ray. It is important to note that this announcement has not yet been confirmed by Universal.

It has long been speculated that Universal was receiving monetary compensation for being an exclusive HD DVD studio. This announcement would signal that they have decided to forgo the compensation in order to release titles on Blu-ray. Most would agree that this move would effectively end the war, and no matter what side you support, a single HD format is the best long term solution.

Now that could all just be rumour, but its amusing to speculate.

lazy compression, fragile and easy to damage the thin protective coating and more expensive

i personally dont have much interest in this subject, but i cant see bluray becoming a long term solution. I mean even when it comes to copying our hd movies, i would need a bluray burner in my pc, it just doesn't seem to fit right with long term scenarios.

hd dvd just seems a natural progression to existing media

Steve - Why does it sound the natural progression?

TO copy HD movies whether it bluray or HD-DVD you would need a new burner?

I think the solution will be the +/-R solution where we just end up with dual forms. Too much back in behind both formats for them to just give up.

bluray just doesnt sound right when talking about progressing from existing media, thats the problem, people dont associate bluray with anything, im talking about the dumbass public here who dont have a clue, the know the word DVD and they know the word HD, bluray will just sound like something random to them

Think you're talking rubbish Steve IMO.

Who knew what a DVD was when VHS was the norm? Its just a name, no-one will know what it means to start with, but it'll quickly associate in peoples minds......

TBH, I don't care which one 'wins' so long as whenever they decide I can buy the things in one format or another, I couldn't care less.

i can see what steve is saying,
dvd is like the next cd, cds evolved from disks, disks came after cassetes, so hd dvd is the obvious progression
