the little filter inside the wheelarch, what is it for, ie...fuel/oil/air etc?

I think it's to do with the egr, you mean the filter in the round black box?

The charcoal collects fuel tank vapour, and then vents it into the inlet when the tank vent valve gets opened by inlet vacuum.
