what do people use to clean there engine and what do they do about all the plugs an elecy in the engine bay

use gunk!! dab it on with a paint brush, then jet wash it off! avoid the dizzy and any wires, etc and do ti with the engine on, that way if the engine judders a bit you know where not to spray!! can buy it from halfords mate

as above. just did mine tonight. removed air box etc, sprayed gunk EVERYWHERE then attacked with pressure washer, gave powder coted bits a wee polish all plastics etc with autoglym bumper care and back to black 
looks a traet

i believe the garage just steam cleaned my engine bay and it sparkles

as above use gunk , its along the lines of the stuff we use at work just not as harsh . you can also use parrafin which takes dirt clean off . to make the plastic bits shiny use something called "finish" or a silicone based spray , like dashboard cleaner , there all the same then wipe it in with a cloth ,no need to wash this . as for covering bits over , use a plastic bag on the battery , ecu isnt necessary on this occasion and depending whether you have an engine cover do the spark plugs .
