we have a amp with no hp/lp filter in it
is there anything you can buy to put in the line so ony bass comes throu to the sub
ps its on a pre-out but there is no sub out on the stereo

yes mate, you can buy crossovers that will sit on the preout and split it into a number of outputs depending on the freq etc Your looking in the region of around 200 quid for something half decent though

yeh you can get a little LPF from autoleads that simply goes into the RCA line form headunit to amp that will allow bass adjustment, i had onea few years back!
wasnt alot of money, £30 maybe

yes, its called a crossover could use an EQ i suppose 
or you could bodge something from maplins/RS, but its horses for courses mate
