I used a hot air gun and blasted it for a while and then twisted like fook, and it came off.
Make sure you get a knob suitable for lift reverse.

Am I the only one to have used a 4" angle grinder then? Took me all of 2 mins - maybe I qualify for fastest removal of gear knob award
Couldnt be arsed to fook about, got a BIG old bed sheet to cover the surrounding area/catch the molten rubberised plastic and wizzed straight down the side of it

Its glued on but you can snap the glue with enough force and gentle heat if you feel like it.
I personally lifted the gaitor and removed the pin at the bottom of the entire stick, removed the stick from the car and put it in a vice and the knob came off no bother at all.

with hindsight, i would have done this also. so much easier that being couped up in the passenger seat trying to hack away at it.
