if and its a big IF traffic cops check it out or you crash the engine number on the engine comes up when the police check the reg number of the car and so it wont match.
i know someone in exactly the same situation as you. and been driving for 2 years like it so.... that tells you seomthing. IF you do get caught just say you bought it like it.

No - its your responsibility to ensure that details on the log book are correct, which includes not only engine size but also of course engine number, which if its a new one will be different.
Worse case scenario is that you crash quite seriously and your car is taken away and in the course of inspection the numbers are checked and don't match, the engine is identified as a larger unit and your insurance is void. Not only would you not get paid out for the car but you would also of course then be prosecuted for driving without insurance.
The penalties are not as high as they should be, and you could go for years un-noticed as some people chose to but you might also crash in the first week you take the car out and basically say good bye to ever insuring a car again if its discovered.
And you would save what - a few hundred quid?

out of interest would the same apply if you put a 1.0 engine into a 1.4 or whatever? i doubt anyone would do this and if they did they would probably say as it would be cheaper.

Yes they look different and any assessor would be able to spot it I think, that ans the top of the block has a clear C14SE stamped on to it, a pretty good give away.

tbh for 90 percent of the time you would get away with this, sometimes coppers do road side checks and they might check tyres and the like but not the engine but if u were in a serious accident then they might notice, only if it was serious as minor there would be no chance of it being noticed, but if u had a serious one and the car was inspectred by the police team then u would be looking as serious serious problems, even if the accident weren't your fault
