u need the rings, end of, yes they do centralise them on the hub, givin the wheel bnolts the full support they need!

they are a safety thing!

Spiggot rings do dissipate some of the weight of the car back in to the wheel. Don't forget it may be plastic but they're very dense compound and the weight is applied uniformly across a large radius area centrered around the lowest point on the ring.

Without these there are sheer forces acting on the bolts as the wheel attempts to move up and down relative to the hub. This is the wrong type of force and may cause failure, and once one goes you can usually bet the others will follow fairly quickly.
