in response to what corsabubble said about if the timing was off- thats not true , the car will run up to 2 teeth off. althought it will produce only about 60% of the power, and be totally unresponsive

so then it could be that the bearing has worn and the timing is off

hopefully gonna be able to inspect it later this evening

just got back in from a few hours buggering about out the garage.

problem was that the bottom pulley had worn, so a spot on diagnosis from where i took it today.
basically, the keyway on the pulley had worn away causing it to move on the crank. this then caused the timing to move out by approximately one tooth.
im glad i pulled it off the road as soon as it started to play up cos it could quite of easily caused a lot more damage.

also took the alternator tensioner bearing off to replace cos thats fucked and broke the tensioner mounting bracket cos the poxy bolt holding it in turned out to be left hand thread. something it did not state in the haynes manual at all

so a nice trip to vaux for me tomorrow resulting in a nice bill

Never come across that before on these engines?
Out of interest how many miles had it done? Had the bottom pulley been off before do you know?

the car has done 94K. and it hasnt been changed before to my knowledge. i am the 3rd owner and have pretty much all the reciepts from the owners who had it before me so i think its still the original item

and the guy that diagnosed it this morning said it wasnt rare but also not common if you know what i mean

he has had 2 other 16v engines with this problem in the past 6 months
