How much would it cost for an engine rebuild of an 14XE?

I dont want to do an engine transplant cos of insurance but id like to know that my engine is bullet proof

Id replace any part that had a performace replacement with one, everything else would be just new standard stuff (if you get me).

To replace every part for a performance one would be similar to this:

Pistons - £400
Rods - £600
Crank - £1400
Bearings - £100
Gaskets - £100
Cams - £400

Plus labour.

but you have to think, for that money you could fit a 2l and pay the extra insurance with it.

Probably a full day or so to build an engine like this. Plus head porting which you'd obviously want with a spec like this.

Thats the main engine stuff, but you'd also want:

Verniers - £150
SBD Roller kit - £100
Cam belt - £15
Water pump - £10
Maybe Oil pump - £150?
Maybe Nylon oil pressure relief valve £50

I assume you plan on fitting tb's to an engine like this, or is it just pie in the sky?

Miles you are a wealth of information

Yes tb's is a must, if by pie in the sky you mean a dream then no, ill deff be doing it asap.

Could you really fit a 2l and pay for insurance as Kris says? Am I right in thinking a standard 2l would not be as bullet proof as the engine described?

Fitting 2.0's is cheap and easy. Should be reliable if you get a good one as well.

You'd be silly not to declare the mods to the 1.4 to insurance as well....

You could fit the 2.0 for the cost of steel rods!

I would be declaring the mods for the 1.4, thought a 2l would be more still though..

So how much could you get a 2l engine for roughly? Im not as keen on this idea but it would be interesting to compare..

Or more like £300 engine and fit it yourself.

Are there not some short cuts that can be taken on the fitting parts? eg, modded sfi box, gsi shafts with old cav cv's, modded mounts.....like you can with nova's basically.

How complicated is it to fit it yourself?

I have never done mechanics before but have fitted some rear clusters

Starting from knowing nothing, what would be the best route to be able to do an engine rebuild yourself? Any decents books or is a course better?

Get a mate that knows what he's doing and get him to do it with you. Thats what I did with my engine, I now like to think I know what im doing

Its not very complicated, but you wouldn't want to do it after only fitting rear clusters
