Checked my bank account yesterday and I've got £670 too much in there.
I had a payment of £670 go in there on the 10th September but I have no idea what its for or who its from.
Rang the bank today, to ask where it came from. They tell me it was cleared by BACS on 10th, and is a "refund."
I asked who it was from and all they could tell me was a reference number which meant nothing to either of us.
Now my dilema, is it legally mine? Do I take it out and treat it as an unexpected windfall and blow it? Or should I hang on to it in case its been paid into my account by mistake somehow and someone tries to claim it back.

I'm self employed and the only "refund" I can think of would be a tax rebate, but surely the bank would know if it came from the Inland Revenue.
I might take it out but hang on to it for a while just in case it isn't mine, but when I spoke to the bank on the phone, they seemed to think it obviously was mine. I wish I knew what it was for though.

Get them to sign something stating it's your money. If not then they can ask you to repay the cash so I wouldn't go taking it out until your sure.

I've no idea. I pay almost 4k every 6 months for tax and I've never had a rebate. All I know is that the payment is a "refund."
I've told the bank that I have no idea what it is for, but they assured me it is mine. I think I'll withdraw it, hang on to it for a month then start spending it

a work for a bank mate - just get a letter signed by the bank to say they put it in, you have checked with them that it is yours and that they do not have an interest in it and will not attempt to claim it at a later date. once the letter is signed, they cant touch that money

Just checked with my mum, who works in a bank...

The bank are unlikely to sign anything to say the money is 100% yours, as if it turns out not to be, they have to be able to claim it back from you (and they can do this at any time).

What they should be able to do is trace the bank the money was paid in from, and from that, they can write to that bank and find out the customer who made the payment......I'd get them to do this before withdrawing it and going on a spending spree.

Yeah I would have thought your bank can put a trace and find out the source of the money... Sounds like someone's given you some cash by mistake!
