My 1.2 16v is rated to go to 105mph.

But i've done 90 in 3rd gear and i recon it could reach 115mph easy.

yup, urs is the 1.4 SPi mate. Seemed fast enuff to me tho.

All 1.2 8vs (except merits) and 1.4 8v's (45/60bhp models) were fitted with the F10WR/5 gearbox.

All of these cars WILL have a higher top speed (on the flat only) in 4th, than they will in 5th. The boxes are based on the early F10WR/4 (4 speed box) as fitted to Novas and 1.2 corsa Merits, but vaux decided simply to add an extra gear. The wide ratio of this gear means its a cruisin gear, and a cruising gear only. 4th in these are designed for m-way use.

Hence this is why on these models, 1st -> 3rd are pretty damn decent gears, and 3rd shud c u to 70+mph before red line. Drop to 4th, and u'll hear the revs drop loads, and the pull come to an end (not too bad on the 1.4's tho). Then 4th->5th change is usually the kind of thing u do when u just wanna take it easy, and cruise at 60-70.

The 4th gear shud take u to the book speed on the flat, before acceleration stops. However, u will find that due to gravity, when in 5th, down hill u'll get 10-20mph fast as the gear is longer.

All of the CR boxes (as fitted to SXi, GSi, SRi, GLS etc) are a totally different story. Most of these will bounce off the limiter in 4th and will almost red line in 5th. Unfortunately, this the close ratios also mean that fuel consumption on a m-way run wud b lower.

Before i got my GSi my first car was an L reg SRi 1.4 8V MPi. The manufacturers top end figure is 108mph i think. I got 120mph and ran out of road with a bit left to go in 5th. That just had i Pipercross induction kit and a Piper cat back exhaust.

The 1.2 16v will b a new style CR box.....so u'll find its at high revs on the m-way.

The pic below is my 1.2 8v as 100mph - Very low revs. If only the engine had the power to redline in 4th!!

Where as a SRi etc wud be @5k or more at that speed ( from picsi've seen in the past)

thats understandable considering 5th is an overrun gear, top speed is achieved in 4th on the 60bhp
