I was taught to decelerate and then select the right gear once you've slowed down to the correct speed. I think this is a pile of shite! It's much better to change down the gear box in order as you slow down, that way you are always in the power band ready to take off again.

yep, i've always prefered to change down whilst braking thru the gears.
and by changing down you help slow down the car..

they teach ya 2 slow then select gear cos brake pads r cheaper than a gear box.

I was taught to brake whilst going down through the gears. It doesnt damage the gearbox in anyway, and is a much more efficient way of braking, since the engine is used to brake as well. Means that when you need to slam the brakes on WHILST you are braking normally, you will get minimal fade, and be able to stop much quicker.

What would you rather have to do? Get a new gearbox about 1000miles before it needs one, or end up in hospital after a nasty crash due to brake fade? I know what i would rather have thanks.

With those brakes as standard, i wouldnt trust them one bit. If you need to slow down eficiently, you HAVE to use the engine to brake as well.

i always gear brake. agree totally with cybermonkey.

how does it wear out the syncromesh quicker??? if your gentle wih it, which you have to be otherwise you'll get thrown about everywhere, what harm can it do???

besides when you are gear braking your going down the gears, it isn't as if you got from 5th to 2nd is it.

Yes you are right, the Synchromesh will only fuck up if you are block changing from say, 5th to 2nd very quickly. If you are gentle, like me and let the clutch out slowly after each gear change, braking is much improved.

Nice, i got a little argument going here

I do find i can stop very quickly with gear braking and of course you're not going to skid because it's the engine taking the power out and not the road wheels.

I can scare people sometimes actually because you can leave braking that much longer before a roundanbout and then move down through the gearbox letting the clutch out slowly.

In fact with a Vectra I can *almost* slow the car down with no brake at all... bigger engone i guess....

Sometimes i dont bother using the brake at all, just brake with the engine, for example, motorway slip roads, i wont touch the brake unless i need to come to a standstill from 10 to 0.

Im a trainee driving instructor and so the book says that "its seldom neccessary to change down in order"
To be honest there is no set way.

I just use me brakes in neutral all the time!
Unless i think FCUK! Whats that idiot doin!

I find that down gearing into a bend keeps the car far more stable than breaking then changing gear which unbalances the car. And under heavy breaking it seems to prevent the wheels locking quite so easy, I cant practicaly explain why this should work but it just does.

yes, your in 5th gear, cruising in 70 and you start to slow down, your doing about 35 and you suddenly need to accelerate off quickly, sh!t you cant cuz your still in 5th at like 1500rpm. you should keep your rev's high enough to be able to pull away at any time, i.e. change down a gear when you slow down.

I drop down the box while braking and slip the clutch a bit to slow down, nearly had a problem yesterday in the rain when i put it in 1st for the width barriers and the wheels locked up

braking whilst changing down, definitely. if you double declutch and pip the throttle on the way down too, you don't wear your synchros out either. Plus you get a smoother ride, no sudden deceleration as you let the clutch up cos you've matched your engine revs to road speed...

iv been taught 2 brake then do a block gear change, ie 4th in2 2nd, i hav gd brakes so i hav confidence in this method

I've grown up around a racing family and well from friends in in all different racing areas it should be obvious that if your gunnning it you want to be using both engine and brakes to slow the car, as your main objective is to keep the car as ready as possible and as such keeping the revs in a peak area. but if ur just talking about being boring on the road its more cost effective just to use the brakes
