My immersion heater decided it was time to blow up last night in a shower of plastic and sparks. Now you can see the tanks is leaking

All looks pretty old so should I just replace it all. Or is it worth trying to replace just the heater and hope it's just the seal

Rip it out, weigh it in (offset the cost a little) and fit a new system if it was me

Edit: in case you want to repair, it looks unlikely that it damaged the tank itself. So turn the breaker off and disconnect the feed to the element, drain the system, or at least the tank, remove the element and inspect the tank itself whilst your there. Then see if you can source yourself a new element

Or fit a Combi of you can afford it. Immersion heaters are expensive to run

No gas in the area.

Guess I have to get a new heater so will try that first in the old tank.

See some tanks are stainless steel is this better than copper ones?

For a weigh in, no it's worth less. As a tank it's pretty much the same either material.

if you rip everything out (assuming it's copper tank) with all the ancillary pipe work you will probably get £150-200. Of course no where near what you need to fit modern heating. I couldn't live with an immersion again tho so combi boilers are essentially in a house for me

Any idea of the cost of something like this, Gary?

I have a hot water tank/immersion set up currently. Boiler is about 25 years old so could probably do with replacing anyway. Wouldn't mind a cost estimate before asking people out.

Dunno tbh Ben. I'd be surprised if it was more than 1200-1500 quid though. I'm not a plumber though do couldn't say 100%

I think my boiler cost that alone so probably a bit more than that with the labour!

When we did ours it was 2100 for a traditional boiler and it would have been around 2600 for a combi due to the amount of pipe-rework involved

You can keep your tank and just get a traditional boiler, you don't need to go to a combi - advantages / disadvantages of both systems

If you're with British Gas you can get them to fit it and then it gets added onto your bill for three gets or so. You barely notice it and get a decent boiler
