Scouting round for a daily for within the next month or two, and got looking at older cars like XR3/i, and the MKII Cavs/Novas etc.

Came across this one http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C601625 it says it's got Suspected porous head (common redtop engine issue) now not having owned a car with a redtop engine ever, what does that mean? Is it a common issue? Is it expensive to repair?

I know that this car will more than likely be snapped up by the time I come to it but would be good for future reference.

Thanks in Advance.

As they may be more reliable (in some people's views) I'm wanting something that I will enjoy driving.

As you know, I'm no expert when it comes to cars, so what you've just said means naff all to me at the moment. Can you put it in laymen's terms? cheers Tom.

take it to a garage and ask them to swap the cylinder head for another one. get the bus home, when they ring up, go back and collect the car and pay the agreed price.

I will do it:

The car is great to use everyday, Tom used a mk2 cav with a 2ltr turbo engine for approximately 8 months and he had no issues.

Remove the head, (top half of engine) and fit a new head. This would involve headgasket and timing, any normal person would also use the opportunity to change water pump as well, Oil + filter change.

I would look to fixing the head if it was me. XE head prices are on the up, so is the rarity. You could end up buying a head and it goes porous a week down the line v

I use it at weekends since I started working in Hereford, pointless driving it 50 mile round trip everyday, would take me all day to get here

The main purpose was for when the weather gets shitty out here in the sticks, was brilliant last year in the floods.

Iv actually found a nice spot for off roading too, been there a few times now
