I certainly would be bitter, however, if I had spent several grand on a ring as a result of being brainwashed by society and marketing bullshit, and was now trying to convince myself that it's a justifiable and reasonable thing to do.

None of us HAD to spend a chuck of money on anything. We were fortunate enough to be able to, so we did.

Just like millionaires don't HAVE to buy mansions and Ferraris, but they can and do.

The amount you spend on a ring doesn't portray how much you love her or how much she's worth to you, it's about how much you like the ring and how much money you want to have tied up in it.

Some people would buy themselves a £100 watch and a £5k engagement ring, others would buy a £100 engagement ring and a £5k Rolex for themselves.

How many people were brainwashed into buying an actual ring from the "engagement" ring section?

I would like to see some pictures actually of these mega money rings people have bought.

This poll was supposed to be anonymous so it wouldn't turn into a debate about who has the fattest portfolio

I was only literally curious about how much people spend.

Hardly think popping the question at Nandos but with a £5,000 ring would be a great story.

I asked 3,300m up a snow covered mountain with no one around and a blue sky day - not exactly Nandos.

Nope, that sounds fantastic.

But what I meant is some people seem more involved with the ring than the setting.

What's wrong with that though?
A ring is to symbolise eternal love and blah de blah

It means FUCK ALL.. Its a piece of metal with an extremely over-priced lump of carbon that happens to have been crushed under enough pressure until it became transparent..

The most disturbing thing is even the retailers know this and they will charge more for an engagement ring simply because they know there are enough class-A c**ts out there who will spend more just because they believe it shows the world that they love their other-half more..

Saw a documentary video recently that diamonds aren't actually that rare, and that their value is due to an agreement between corporations that cut diamonds must remain valuable.

Diamonds are everywhere, drill bits etc. Obviously not cut and polished which obviously adds some value but most of it is from this ancient agreement.

What a load of tripe.
I take it you have zero sentiments towards anything??? A photograph of a dead person doesn't mean anything in reality. But I bet it means a lot to close ones.

Yes, It is a lump of carbon. But it's fucking awesome looking!
Aesthetically, a diamond is beautiful when cut.
Gold, platinum, silver, bronze, whatever... Has value.
Design also has value.

You can't compare a photograph of a loved one and the memories it would re-ignite to spending money on an over-priced product just because society tells you to do so!

Have you seen how many £1,000+ Engagement rings end up on eBay and sell for fuck all?

First one on the list of completed listings.. Some poor fucker bought a £1,000 RRP 18ct ring with a combined nearly 1ct of diamonds.. How much did this wonderful investment sell for? That's right less than £380..
Have you ever tried selling a diamond? Unlike gold no fucker wants them.

UN-LUCKY!

Or check out this bad boy!

Nearly "£6k's worth" .. Got to be a steal with a starting bid of £1,300 right? NOPE Didn't even fucking sell.

I would highly recommend going to a smaller jewellers and designing your own ring(s). I was surprised at the range/choice of stones (many of which are rarer than diamonds).

In many ways it's cheaper too, as they do add an 'engagement ring premium' in a lot of jewellers, as they do at wedding fares for wedding shiz.

It holds sentiments much like a photograph.

And you can't put a value on sentiment so why fucking try?

I'd bet if you asked a large group of women "Would you rather have a cheap engagement ring and a grand to spend on UGG-boots, hand-bags and shit 99% of them would go for the cash, because deep down inside they don't really give a shit about a ring, they just want to show off.

I agree and disagree.

I think most do care about the ring, but not so much its cost, but how it looks.

If you want an idea of how impressed she is when you give her the ring you can measure how much the fanny twitches in cms and work it out
