I've seen CAT D's that are smashed to oblivion.. I've also seen CAT C's that are just a few scratches

My mates corsa had a £6k repair and isnt even recorded

7 years ago, the car is only about that old.

Written off when it was a few months old it must have taken a fair knock.

Would have been £25k ish? That's a £12k+ repair.

Yea - but what im saying is on a hpi it doesnt even come up with anything and he doesnt have to declare anything - my bets are his car was worse than a fair few that get written off....

So all this avoid cat d / c shit is bollicks

I dont think insurance repair comes up on HPI unless its a write off?

Does take the piss a bit that a lot of clean cars are actually damaged.

I had one that had been on fire the other month. HPI clear, interior fire started while the underneath was getting welded. No claim because the garage bought the guy another one out of their own funds. Could have put an interior back on it and retailed it as a clean car. Never mind the underseal and paint all burnt off and rust set in under the carpet and probably inside the sills.

My bro in law has had a fair few like that.. The best was 6 month old Passat CC with 1500miles on the clock that had damage to every single panel, every window smashed and the rear off-side suspension caved in... Totally un-recorded...

Going to sit down and talk with her tomorrow and find out the facts of the motor, from wat ive saw the repair is bang on as i wouldnt of known untill she said apart from the price. Mates going to do this experian check thing for a fiver as he buys five for 25 quid being a car dealer.

Other thing to watch for if there is no sign of a repair is that its not a ringer.

Could potentially be a stolen car purporting to be the identity in question.

If the VINs look OK then the next best way to check that out is to decode the VIN and get the month and year digits out of it, then compare them to the markings on the back of the plastics. Whip the ash tray out for example, see if that tallys. Need a bit of knowledge of the car to know what bits of trim come off without any major disassembly and where the markings are but its worth doing for the five minutes it'll take.

BMW being the only manufacture I'm aware of who don't have a date in the VIN

Just take the ash tray apart and look for date markings.

See like the little grid in the bottom of this -

Look for the newest dot.

A few months before the date of first reg, up to probably about a year before is OK. Obviously if its a 2007 with a 2009 ash tray, ask some questions

Spoke with women, car was coming upto 3 yrs old when had knock to door. Basically it was a bmw lease car coming upto the end of the lease when had bump so they just told insurance blah blah blah. Had 2 owners, bmw and current.

Hpi check states vrm recorded by insurance company as "total loss"

I'm still not convinced they're going to write it off for a knock to the door when it was three years old.

You'd need >50% of the value of the car in damage.

It is recorded as a cat c, her husband got it wrong. Saw v5c form last night (substantinal damage, repaired in 2009) (pass) at vic centre. So what your sayin ian, the damage must of been really bad to the door. Women has drove this car since 2011 with no problems, shes said i can have for 3700. Seems alot of car for the money, what you reckon folks ?
