Got a quick question here for anyone who knows, bought a plate a few months ago and its on retention but thinking about putting it on the car now. The question is when i update my insurance to tell them the plate is on the car will i need to pay a admin fee to have my documents changed? Im with elephant but im sure they usually have a admin fee for change of address etc so was just wondering if it would be the same for the plate?
Insurance is due again in a couple of months anyway so i'll just wait till then if theres a fee but thought i would ask here first as theres a few folk with private regs here

Usually a £15 fee but it differs from place to place. You'd have to phone and ask.

Thats what i thought eck, need to renew it in 2 months anyway so il just wait till then, its on retention untill august anyway so can just stay there another couple of months lol

I know its not much but dont see the point of paying it when i can just wait a few months and not get charged for it, cheers for the replys guys

Corsa is with a specialist insurance broker on a "modified" policy and ripped me off £25 to change it.
Might sound daft, but I would check that changing the plate on the renewal doesn't incur a charge, because technically your still changing the details on the renewal, not just doing a straight renewal.

I can only speak regarding Admiral, it is free online to change but if you call they charge a £25 admin fee.

I added my evo plate with admiral - told the woman on the phone that the person i took policy out with said it was free - no charge for me she did it straight away

Been charged a million times by admiral group, ensure increased the premium, not and admin charge

I've just swapped my plate from Corsa to Fiesta before Christmas. Was still waiting for logbooks back etc. so swapped insurance to fiesta on its original plate. I'm with admiral and the woman asked me if I was putting the plate on, I said yes. She said ok if you call back to change the plate within 30 days there will be no admin charge.

I was stopped by the police after a couple of months of having my private plate fitted. They were saying my car wasn't showing up as insured and I couldn't think for the life of me why not. They let me off with a HORTE and I phoned the insurance company - it was only when the guy read out the details that it clicked. I had changed everything to do with the plate except the insurance so they still had the original plate on their system. Changed it there and then for no fee. Was a small mob called City Insurance, I'd defo recommend them, the only reason I used then was because they were the cheapest on comparethemarket but they ended up really easy to get on with for changing stuff.
On the note of insurance and getting stopped by the police - if you happen to know you don't have insurance then simply tell the officers you can't remember which company you're with... Nine times out of ten you'll get a producer instead of the car impounded. The twice it's happened to me (when I've genuinely couldn't remember the company's name) I've been allowed to drive away even though it seems that I'm uninsured. Just in case that info gets someone out of a pickle

But if you know you dont have insurance - you shouldnt be driving..

I can honestly say i have never driven a car uninsured in my 15 years driving. If you have no insurance, get the bus, use another form of public transport or get a lift.

Using my third party insurance i have driven friends and family cars.
It's not something i like doing! Currently i use the mrs car if mine is being a twat which is on my policy. Same goes for the mrs, she uses my car as a named driver. If that fails, my sister and I use my Mum's car who has us both on her policy.
You sir, deserve to be caught out and taken off the road for being such an idiot.
