So Obama has slated Sony for axing the film and this'll be massive propaganda for North Korea.

Sony are now saying they wanted to release it but no cinema chain wanted it due to threats of terrorism.

I personally believe they should've defied the threats and released it. This is a massive victory for North Korea and makes America as a whole look weak. I was also interested in seeing the movie, so i'm a little gutted it won't be out now.

What are your views on the issue?

I thought everyone just laughed at North Koreas outrageous threats.

Personally I was very surprised about it when I read the film Was cancelled.

I had zero interest in seeing it mind.

They should just allow it to "leak" online and let everyone watch it anyway, the amount of press its got it'd be massive

while I agree Ben, its a difficult decision.

From the outside its easy to say why didn't any Cinema chain want to show the film, but if your one small cinema chain that has been directly threatened, is it worth placing your employees directly in the crosshairs of being attacked and having all their employees personal information, emails and passwords posted online etc.......... all over 1 film? Probably not.

If It was my company, I don't think I would want to jeopardise that over 1 film, despite wanting to still stand up for freedom of speech etc.

Tough call.....

The cynic in my says that the film wasn't getting the press exposure that Sony wanted.

This seems to be too perfect. Film about North Korea is threatened by North Korea resulting in massive worldwide exposure with regular news stories about the subject...

It's the kind of publicity money can't buy..

But I think North Korea must be knocking one off over this. Talk about over indulging a spoiled brat!

It's a catch-22 situation - if none of the big chains wanted to show the film then it's likely the box office figures would have been piss-poor and Sony probably wouldn't have had much of a return. I suspect they will release it but once this whole hacking scandal has died down.

Although i'm surprised they cancelled the film worldwide as the threats seemed to be aimed at America rather than elsewhere.

Think you need some of this....

With the FBI and US government being involved, it would have already come to light very quickly if it was a publicity stunt. And why would Sony want to cause tens to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damages in leaking data for a film that only cost forty million to produce?

Plus Sony have cancelled the production of Pyongyang (another north korean based film), which would also suggest this isn't all a stunt.

Saying that, any publicity is good publicity and it'll certainly help when Sony decides to release The Interview.

Where has the data actually been leaked Dom? I can see plenty of talk about it on news websites but not a lot of actual hard evidence...

The president doesn't say he's disappointed in Sony not releasing the film as part of some publicity stunt

There's cynical (which I am about everything) and then there's tinfoil hat like Dom has mentioned.

It's definitely made the film bigger than it would ever have been. I think it's more down to Sony being completely terrible at security than anything else.

They should have still shown it though, it seems like a pretty successful form of terrorism to me at the moment, because they cancelled.

Definitely not for publicity any more... was easy to think that at the beginning now now Sony's losing money over this.

Don't think they should have given in to Korea though, now they know what to do in future to gain power

Sony's cheif executive felt the need to go onto bloomberg news to defend his company. Definitely not a publicity stunt, Robin.

This made me

After Obama's press conference, it now appears Sony are releasing The Interview, although they haven't said how they'll distribute it.
I suspect they'll go the digital route and offer it on their Playstation store if the cinema's are still not willing to show it.

Bits of it are on various torrent sites and a lot of news outlets have leaked financial and actor data.

The FBI were involved from the start so i'm not sure it could have ever been classed as a publicity stunt.

Sony has now reversed the decision and will release it for cinemas who wish to show it.

Highest scoring film ever on imdb already it was 10.0 earlier.
