I know it sounds really bloody easy, and on a domain you'd just use redirected folders and offline files but this is doing my head in on two standalone computers.

I don't want to be making links or anything, I want to sync C:\Users\Joe\Documents and C:\Users\Joe\Desktop with the same locations on the other computer. Nothing seems to be doing the trick. Anything anyone has used out there?

Thanks

Robocopy would do it but there's a thing I use for copying files about called Syncovery. It's not free though.

We use synctoy at work for data and docs from the server to remote workers. Never had any problems in the 4 years or so we have been.

You can change the location of the Documents, Photos, e.t.c. directories on Windows 7 and above to somewhere different like a network share by right clicking on the folder and choosing a different location. You can then set the files to be available offline, much like you described in your first sentence of the question. I *think* that you have to make a change in the registry to do the same for your desktop, I can't remember if it's done in the same way as the other folders.

I used to do this before I switched to a Mac - it meant that stuff like the desktop could be share between my desktop and laptop and it worked quite well. I noticed that the Windows file sync tool didn't play very well with my Linux NAS though, but I'm guessing this isn't an issue where.

It's something i've used to backup my media collection for quite some time. You have the ability to script it also if needed.
