HD-SDI (1080P digital streamed over coax) is the highest quality Coax standard you'll get for CCTV.. The live image quality is phenomenal (you lose some quality after recording because of the compression).

I've got a 4 camera system here I'm very happy with the quality, but to be honest IP cameras are more flexible you just lose a tiny bit of quality because unlike HD-SDI cameras the IP cameras compress the video at the camera which means less detail.

We've just installed a 12 camera Analogue HD system in a pub in Glasgow, the quality is incredible. Visibly better than the IP CCTV system we installed in a factory couple weeks before which was several times more expensive. Only problem is when you start increasing the volume of cameras storage is a big issue for any length of time.

Those were both using Hikvision cameras.

Yeah I've not been blown away by the quality of IP cameras, even the 1080p stuff isn't amazing.. but its all down to the amount of compression that is being used and I guess its horses for courses because the which ever system you look at there will be compression on the recorded footage anyway so it all depends on how important the live feed is to you.

There are a various compatible iPhone and Android apps available ..

The DVR was just under £200 and the cameras were just over £100 a piece IIRC.. Well under £1000..

With regards to IP cameras the age old saying "you get what you pay for" is very relevant when it comes to quality, reliability and features.

Not necessarily true; you should look at the Hikvision cameras a few of us have, they're certainly up there with cameras that cost two/three-times the price

The hard disk is irrelevant its just a standard SATA3 drive..

However to use HD-SDI cameras the DVR system MUST support HD-SDI its not interchangeable with Analogue or IP systems

There are hybrid systems available but they are pricey.

I have, 2 sat on the test bench - although good and cost effective, they are not in the same league as some of the more corporate main stream brands.

They have there place in the market which is true enough, and they are becoming a strong player, but i could never roll them out along side the likes of Sony, Avigilon or even Mobotix.

Having said that a lot of the argument comes down to what VMS backs up the cameras.

HikVision are possibly the BEST budget solution out there IMHO.. Their DVR's have nice firmware and the Desktop/Mobile software is better than most high end solutions.

Well I've changed over to IP Cameras now.. I only ever got round to running the cabling for the HD-SDI system to three cameras and then I got sick of doing it.

The price tumbled on IP stuff again so I bought four cameras (one PTZ) and I've ordered an additional network switch to connect them all into.

The quality on the HD-SDI system is definitely superior but when the house was renovated I put in CAT5 for the CCTV and annoyingly its not compatible with HD-SDI so I'm having to resort to IP.
