My Sky HD box has been playing up for months now. Tried rebuilding the planner but it still gets a blue screen sometimes. The wireless adaptor's stopped working too so want to get a new one.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/Be-WARY-of-Buying-The-Sky-HD-Reciever-Box-Con-/10000000175204637/g.html

Should I be bothered about the above happening? I'm thinking of buying from this link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-UNOPENED-Sky-DRX895W-WIFI-Sky-HD-2TB-Box-Anytime-3D-Ready-BUILT-IN-WIFI-/301318342541?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Satellite_TV_Receivers&hash=item4627f9078d which seems to be a shop selling them rather than an individual that's just had an upgrade

Do they not replace faulty equipment while you are a subscriber? Surely you are only renting the box?

Note, I've never had sky

No you buy the box from Sky unlike Virgin

Normally if a box breaks and you ring up then they will try and charge £65 to come out and fix it to which you just them ask to Cancel. When your put through they will waive the fee.

Node - some people also use old Sky boxes for freest as well.

I've got an older box if you want it for a tenner + postage or so, think it's the 40gb (slightly larger than the new versions) one.

We moved house and got a new sky contract, so got a new one, I'd assume it'll still work fine now though?

I've got two of the things under my bed. Both have been used for 12 months and then bagged up when we renewed the contract and got a new one installed.

personally if your out of contract, I was just ring up and ask for a new replacement box.
When they say they want to charge you, ask to be put through to the cancellation department.

Say you don't fancy forking out however much it is for a brand new sky box (£170?) and can get a free box + cheaper deal with Virgin by signing up with them.

im 99% sure you'll get offered a free box.
If it goes all the way to the cancellation stage, you can ask for the final cutout off date, where they actually flip the switch to kill your sky feed. Its likely to be x weeks in advance and you have until that date to change your mind and cancel your cancelation.
Theres a very very slim chance it'll get that far.

For the record, I had been with Sky for 2.5 years, merely complain that my Sky box was crashing and got a brand new 2TB + wifi box without even threatening to leave.
If your paying them for a service, its in their interest that you receive that service, not the other way around.

I'll try Sky but I can't threaten them with Virgin as we can't get it round here.

Personally, I would still try that little stunt, and just play on the fact that you haven't looked into any further than checking out pricing on the Virgin website.

The threat to leave will be enough rather than a thinly veiled threat to go to a competitor who cannot provide you with a service in your area. They will know Virgin aren't in the area.
