There are a number of factors that contribute to dropped calls, the hardware is only one of them.

Going by the post it appeared he was only considering the hardware to be at fault (dropped call = get a Nexus).

At least try a restore or a new sim...

CCC video of someone duping the AuthenTec sensor - http://vimeo.com/75324765

It does appear to be a little bit of a faff but it's looks relatively straight forward, in terms of technique and equipment, to achieve and certainly something that an average bod could do with a trip down Maplin's (or similar) and a bit of reading.

Tbh, i was more surprised at how little processing was done on scanned finger print (granted, it was a 'fresh' print and no doubt smudge free but still)

Edit - edited tagline from 'hacked' to duped because LeeM is getting his panties in a muddle over the commonly used term

its not hacked at all, youre replicating someones fingerprint. its as much of a hack as just cutting off their finger, but probably harder.

And that's the issue - the AuthenTec sensor is suppose to have 'security features' that should prevent that happening but it seems it can be fooled relatively easily.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world if Touch ID has turned out to be a bit of a gimmick rather than a hardy security feature; i suspect anyone desperately wanting to steal data off your phone can do it quite easily without even touching the user based security features (passwords/passcodes/TouchID etc).

Hacked can be used as making something perform a function that it wasn't intended to. This meaning came before leet computer haxors. Hacked is a fine term for what's going on here.

it requires a hell of a lot more effort than standing behind someone and watching while they punch in their 4 digit pin.

I would still use TouchID over a password

Over 1000 dollars worth of equipment includes the camera and laser printer, which although do cost money, most people have/have easy access to.

Another point is that consumers won't care, which they won't.

Most of the cost will be the DSLR he used (laser printer are cheap and i don't see anything specialised with the one that was used); could easily substitute it for a scanner (as CCC used) and significantly reduce the cost. Similarly, lifting the print off of an object would be last resort; you'd go for the easier option of scanning the phone and hope for a decent print there.

There's also an error in that article as CCC used the same etching method - but that's by the bye.

I still don't have my phone.

How can Apple conceivably manage to fuck it up this much unless trying to create demand that wouldn't be there otherwise?

They are more than capable of having phones ready in time, it'll have been in development for years, not as if they just got a final blueprint of it last week.

What are you talking about, I ordered within 30 seconds of them becoming available. If they sold out of all stock in 30 seconds I would understand, they didn't though.

If I wanted to overpay, or get a contract (and overpay) I'd have one.

It's because they have to divvy them out across each of the networks now resulting in less sim free.

Should be the ones who buy outright who get first serve not the muppets paying nothing up front.

Lee, £21 a month for the sim, so why you pay £38 a month?
