If it plays within the Chrome browser then i would suspect that you could mirror it to Chromecast. There's already talk of a few apps (MX Player etc) adding support to pipe local media on the device to the Chromecast although reading more into it, it sounds like they'll use mirroring.

I've yet to look at the SDK but the question is whether or not you can feed the Chromecast a location to the source file and get it to play it. If you can then it opens up NAS boxes and the likes.
