By the time you've bought a case, mouse, keyboard, wi-fi dongle, all the leads etc, you might as well just buy an Apple TV if all you want is a media centre.

Screw it onto the VESA mount on the back of my TV, control it via the XBMC iPhone app, plug it directly into my router via ethernet

Think I'll just buy one for programming and development though and use an ATV for TV.

If it came with a case I'd buy it, knowing a circuit boards hanging off the back of my TV by a screw would bug me.

I think it's an impressive bit of kit and I'll probably get one eventually, but I think those that want it just for a media centre should consider some of the better alternatives that don't cost too much more.

i don't get it, the website is a bit shit, but i'm not a computery type of person.

It seems to be a 256k computer without a case and no hard drives?

what sort of thing can that do? browse the internet?

It's for kids to plug into their TV and learn how to program. It doesn't need an HDD because it takes an SD card and because it runs Linux you can do a whole host more stuff than originally intended. Also, because it's got no case and exposed headers/connectors you can connect it to hardware which would normally be very difficult to work with on a normal PC.

Perhaps you mean raw processing power (even then there might be the chance of off-loading to the GPU), but it can actually do rather complicated 'things' if you want it to.

Either way, it's perfectly suitable as a cheap media player or a frontend to Myth etc.

No but then you couldn't on a AppleTV or any other low-powered computer

If it's not for you then it's not for you, but there are hundreds of applications where something like the RPI would fit perfectly.

If you're after something with more power then there are plenty of other small/low-powered systems like Cotton Candy and CuBox; but they're 5-10 times the price of the RPI.

My comparison with Apple TV was solely for the media centre use case.

My reference to Call of Duty was in response to 3CM asking what it can do.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great bit of kit. It's certainly going to open a lot of doors.

Opinions on best uses for Raspberry Pi apart from XBMC?

There's been a couple suggested on their forums which are particularly useful; solar panel statistics web server, in-car entertainment (some crazy people have mini desktops mounted in the boot!) and home automation.
