been thinking of getting some turtle beach headphones, i was going to get the X41, wireless with surround sound.

my mate who seems to think he knows it all just got the X12 ones? They seem a bit naff from the spec, £30-£40, and just stereo headphones with a mic and shitloads of wires?

are there any better makes to consider, probably spending around the £100-£130

X41's are the daddies imo, no wires plus Dolby 7.1, just expensive.

X12's are great with the bass boost, etc, 3rd of the price of the above, but not proper surround unless you buy the Earforce DSS to make them Dolby 7.1

I think both are excellent for the money, just depends what the budget is and if you're bothered about proper surround.

Personally a decent set of closed-backs would probably be better. Currently use a set of Beyer DT250's and they aren't terribly musical being 'reference' headphones (they're reasonably flat-ish; roll off at ~150Hz and ~10K) but personally I find them spot on for gaming, decent clarity, imaging and reasonably sensitive.
Haven't heard the Turtle Beach stuff but I can't imagine it's anywhere near as a good a decent set of headphones (anything with 'bass boost' should be avoided tbf). Certainly struggle to see how the X41's 'are the daddies' when they're £100 for 7.1 headphones; didn't rate the AT 5500's and they're over four times the price.

Edit - If you're after a headset then something like the AKG GHS series or Beyer MMX series might be a better choice. Can't personally comment of either though as I haven't used/listened to them.

From personal experience, Turtle Beach headsets are poorly put together and break.

The Audio Technica 5500's aren't gaming headphones, rather they're aimed at the film/tv market; but yes i'd agree with you regarding gaming.

This to be honest. Can add the word "Gaming" to a normal set then charge 50% more !

Turtle beach ones (x12) are okay for light gaming, I found them quite uncomfortable after a while, sound quality was fine but nothing special, the mic is pretty sensitive at first so best to lower that down if there is that option for xbox360 (Used them on the PC) as it picks up loads of background noise for people who can hear you.
They are okay but personally would like them to be a bit more refined and better made.

I just use sennheiser £20 headphones and the sound quality is much better, only geeks need a mic

Pretty pointless playing online as a party without a mike, especially on FPS type stuff.

I have the X11s, apart from the mass of wires they are fine for what I need. I'd like a go with the X41s to see what difference the 7.1 makes but can't justify the price if there isn't much in it.

Playing without a mic on a team based game is pointless. I used to play Rainbox Six Vegas all the time and that wouldve been impossible to win at without speaking.

I used to play Killzone and MoH online, I would just do my own thing, that and avoid people on my side trying to shoot me

Haven't used a mic in the all the years i've been playing FPS's (CS 1.1 was one of my first FPS's); don't feel the need nor the point in listening to some 10 year old mouthing off about how fat someone's 'mumma' is, rather just get on with the game.

i like them, never had other sets like these. all ways used the wireless xbox one, makes you feel more immersed in the game, but then sowill tb i suppose, i just preferred the look of these to the turtle beaches and seen as they were same price range with the sale thought i couldn't go wrong,

Whilst mic seems to be common and both are accepted, I believe mike is the correct abbreviation for microphone.

I'm sure Mr Collins agrees with me

Pedant mode off and back on topic, those Trittons look a bargain, I'd go for those.

Did you get some in the end? Im looking at the X41's, I want a quality sound experience like I have with my 5.1 speaker system but without annoying anyone else in the house.
