This has got me thinking/quite excited:

A $25 Linux computer that supports HD video out via HDMI - surely you could configure it to connect to your NAS or portable HDD to play your movies using XBMC. Think I'll pick one up next month, when they're released, and have an experiment

Seems it can do 1080p h.264 as well, awaiting further codec info to be published. Only other thoughts are if XBMC can be compiled to run on an ARM processor? I asume it can seeing as it can run on Apple iOS devices.

It can already run on other ARM boards but yes, perfect for a media player.

I think the CuBox might be worth a look.

Its some really interesting tech thats starting to come out. Whats interesting is that this chip is able to do 1080p although very restrictive on codec which is always the issue as anyone who has a server with movies will know they cover a who range of codecs

I think the most interesting thing about these things are that the whole computer sits on the chip in the middle! I suppose the board could be even smaller if you wanted it to be.

Want. Think i may have to have a play next year!

Restrictive codecs is the only thing that bothers me.

Will it down streaming via XMBC?

I've been waiting for this for a year now, I'm getting one to use as a webserver, another as a fileserver/nas with an attached usb hdd, another for work to drive a 24 hour presentation screen, and prob 2 more to play about with. Awesome bit of kit, but will no doubt sell out on the first day.

Completely defeats the purpose of the unit by paying that much

Edit; just read the auction, still a bit stupid IMO, if they need the money they should take pre-orders now

Which one have you been looking at the Rasberry Pi or Cubox?

Will be nabbing one of these, hopefully, on release as a HTPC client.

Bart - CuBox, looks interesting, but it's bloody expensive for what it is.

I think in a few months there will be "cases" for the Raspberry Pi being sold, which will probably look like the CuBox.

So how will it work? Install xbmc Plug it into your tv with hdmi, plug a hard drive in and watch films?

Yup.

The OS and software will run off of an SD card, then you can use a USB HDD or a NAS as you'll want it plugged into your router so it can connect to the web.

Was thinking I'd just make a little mount for it that screws into the VESA mount on the back of my TV. Would keep it out the way and eliminate the need for a case, obviously no good if you're using a wall mount.

Might give it a go if it's that easy. I'm far from a computer nerd, am I gonna be able to use it? My routers sat behind the tv so I can put it close to both?
How are you going to control it and navigate through the menus etc?

I read that (above) on their forums earlier, alternatively you could always stick it on the back with some tape, or take the back of your tv off and mount/screw/tape it there.

No need for a keyboard as you can use your phone or use a wireless one in the USB slot

The thought of internally mounting it also crossed my mind - would be damn cool!

There's an XBMC WiFi remote for iPhone and Android, you could use something bluetooth too if you needed. Bear in mind you've only got one USB port, but you can always expand using a hub. You can use network and USB storage at the same time, but I suppose no one really knows how easy it's all going to be to setup as they haven't been released - on paper it's as simple as plugging it all in and installing the software.

If your TV has USB ports to plug in pen drives then you could power it from there too. All nice and self contained

Looks a bit of a mess tbh, would have only cost them 1-2 dollars more to put it in a case.

The sort of people it's aimed at would rather have a bare board than a case.
