i will be sorting out the house over christmas and one of the main things that i have a problem with is the gloss skirting/doors that is supposed to be white, but has gone a creamy colour.
does anyone know why it has done this? i used dulux brilliant white gloss so thought it should be ok.
would it be better to paint over them in matt white? or would this do the same?
i painted the doors/skirting about 6 months ago so seems like it's faded quite quick.

I was advised to use oil based stuff. It's only been on a couple of months though. Hasn't faded so far.

Dulux had big problems with water based gloss yellowing recently. Oil should be better.
Gloss yellows generally anyway though.

matt always looks better but you get more bristle lines on it unless you cake it on

the yellow ting on the gloss will be due to no sunlight getting to it

Had noticed that aout the dulux paint, We did the whole house (All the skirting, and woodwork) and it seems to have yellowed very quickly!

Ronseal wood paint with anti yellowing agent. The yellowing is the oils from the paint. The Ronseal is water based been on now 8 months and its still bright white

I used Satinwood and it has yellowed already.
Certainly looks better than gloss though.

Use trade dulux pure brilliant white satin wood.
Doest seem to yellow, doesnt 'drip' like gloss and just looks better in my opinion.
Obv if you want shiney go for gloss

Me too. Rooms in this house where the sun always goes into them, the gloss is definitely yellowing but in other rooms with not much sunlight in are white.
That's next on my to-do list for the house, other half says she doesn't want gloss on the skirting boards and door frames.

Ive just done my hall, which has 4 doors and a fair bit of skirting.
Done it all gloss, looks so much nicer than satin, if the finish is nice. Otherwise it looks wank

First up did you prime it or just gloss on top of gloss?
We always use acrylic undercoat on doors and architraves/frames even if previously glossed otherwise the colour underneath bleeds through eventually if you just gloss on top.
Also as mention water based paints are shite for covering. What AK suggested is what we use, lots of people lately are going satinwood but you cannot beat the freshly finished look of gloss against a full re dec looks so much brighter.

gloss skirting/door frame in gloss but a matt door would look wrong imo.
just realised my dads house is all matt, so going down that route.

In all the jobs I've done I have never been asked to do the doors in satin and the architrave in gloss.

most that i've done have been satin doors and gloss frames, also if you think gloss is shit to use then try a polyurethane finish (not that i expect any of you's ever would).
it's like painting with water that can give you cancer. i hate using the stuff at work
