My work have managed to forget the wep key for the wireless.

How can I go about getting it?

If they're that retarded then it's probably the same one as it came with so it'll be written on the back. Fuckin WEP at a business Hope there's nothing confidential on the network.

Open browser, enter the routers IP address (aka Gateway IP), login using username/password, have a browse around the wireless setup section - most routers mask the key, so you'll likely have to change it anyways.

If it is WEP then it NEEDS to be changed to at least WPA, as WEP is about as secure as a fag packet. Again if it is WEP you could just crack it and gain the password that way.

Usually it's 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254

Just try those in your browser once connected via wifi/ethernet.

If neither of those work, go on cmd and type ipconfig and it'll be the IP for the gateway.

what router are they running?

If they've lost the code then they might not know the password for the router

ethernet cable > 192.168.0.1 (or whatever the routers address is) > Username: Admin/Administrator/Root > Password: password

worth a try, lol

If you haven't got the username/password for the router and it definitely is WEP encryption on the wireless then i'd think about cracking it, otherwise it'll be a router reset.

Worst case, press the reset button and it'll be the password wrote on the back.

What happens if i reset router? Is it gonna fuck loads up?

Found that 192.168.5.1:8080 will ask for password, but nothing works, googled defaults etc, but nothing will let me in.

Have you tried leaving the password blank?

Just press reset, from the sounds of it there's a distinct lack of IT skills going on in that place so I doubt it's had any settings changed. You might then need the logon details for the service provider tho.

Where do you work? Sounds retarded.

I know very little about it, and if i fuck it up, shit will hit the fan. So im thinking leave the reset for now.

Considering the network was setup by a local big company, its pretty shocking tbh lol

Hacking wep key all seem to involve iso files etc, is there anything i can just download and use?

Only issue i'd have about resetting is if anything funky has been setup (VPNs, VLans, even port forwards). See if you can track down the password first prior to resetting it.

What's the router anyways?

So you know little about it, yet they want you to sort it, but if it goes wrong it's all your fault? Lovely

Router wouldn't happen to be a Thompson would it?

No. It's just a small hgv workshop, family run. No one has tasked me with sorting it, but they need it sorting asap for a new pc to be added. No one else has an ounce of computer knowledge and don't even know what a wep key is lol.

It's a draytek vigor2600g

Would it not be easier to extract the key from a machine that's already setup for the wifi?

Run this on a machine with wifi setup already

I would have thought the IT company would know the password. In similar SMB setups done by IT companies, i've seen them use the same password on the router as the server; might be worth trying passwords of any servers if you have them.

Default on Drayteks, from what i remember, is admin / admin (all lowercase). No doubt you've tried that though.

Either way, resetting is last resort.

Edit - Good thinking by Brett, if you have another system connected via wireless then use http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html to extract it.

Edit 2 - Fuck sake Brett, with your edit to add the link

If you do get access to the router, might be worth saving the settings/config file just incase anything happens in the future.
