friend of mine that has passed some mechanics course was having a mooch around my car the other night, decided to have a look underneath. Got the jack out and proceeded to try to jack the front end up via the sump until i asked him wtf he was doing to which his mate piped up its fine he always does it too. This guy works in a garage!

Another trainee mechanic at work has also seen people doing it on there course. Asked a few people at work and they also they they usually do it. Does anyone else do this?

Fuck that, a jack would easily pop a hole in an ally sump.

I do it to support engines when I take a mounting off but always put a piece of wood or rubber on to save putting a hole in the sump.

Trying to actually jack the car up is ridiculous though.

Exactly the same as Joe. Use it to support engine with a lump of wood but would never think of jacking a car up on the sump!

I do that too, but not lifting a car by its sump.

That's a different kettle of fish though. Supporting it is a good thing, lifting the entire weight of the car by it is suicide

Why didn't he just jack it up by the front bumper anyway like any normal person would?

If you're using a proper jack with a massive lift plate and a rubber pad you can get away with it to support the engine but its not adivsable.. To do it with a ltitle halfords type jack would just be fucking stupidity

I've seen it done before but...not quite the same as that.

Only where the car has already been jacked up and the car is on about 4-6 trolley jacks, just for extra support, but not supporting the entire weight by itself, it's sure to be a retarded thing to do.

Fucking hell, forgetting the fact the jack could pierce the sump that's a lot of weight to put on rubber engine mounts
