So my sister is quite prepared to fork out £1,300 on a Macbook 'because it looks good' despite me telling her that she can get a far better spec for half the price if she went with a PC. I don't know much about Mac's, what's the down sides to them (besides the huge price)?

What laptop should I suggest to her instead?

The spec is not that much of a big deal. Macs run differently so will run faster on a lower spec.

If she has never used a mac before and itsnt particularly good with computers then push her towards the new Sony Vaio's. There looking pretty sleek.

MAC's don't run differently anymore, they use the same x64 processor arcitecture as any PC, hence why they will now run any Windows operating system without any problems.

To be honest, a Macbook is a pretty well specced machine. 2.4Ghz Dual Core, 2GB RAM and 256MB graphics card for £800. The equivalent Dell's are going to set you back roughly the same amount of money and the Macbook is probably going to be better made.

For £800 I'd be wanting a Core i5 and 4GB now, with 64 bit Win7

Well I didn't know that! I'll be quiet then

Wish someone would start making cool looking PCs though, along the mac mini lines

difference between mac and a pc?

quite a lot more money for a name brand and a different operating system which imo isnt as good as windows 7, thats about it

god knows why people would pay so much more for a pretty looking machine

You could always just buy a case like that and put the components in that you want

Except they use EFI instead of BIOS's and use odd form factors rather than the standard ATX form. There's also a few subtle changes as well.

OS preferences and 'fanboism' aside, the main reason why Macs are used in the industry is software/hardware compatibility eg: using Avid, Logic, Protools LE/HD (it runs on the PC but there are performance differences between running it on Apple hardware/OSX and PC/Windows) etc.

Back to topic, apart from the price i wouldn't say there were many downsides to owning a Mac although note that repair costs are extremely high. But then again i wouldn't say there were many plus sides to owning a Mac either (unless you need to use a Mac/OSX for software/hardware as i stated above) as they have their fair share of problems as well ie: OSX isn't more secure than Windows (a report by a security firm actually said there were more holes in OSX than Windows) and they're also open to viri/malware etc.

If your sister is desperate to own one purely for aesthetics then unless she can get HE (Higher Education) discount then i would really look into getting a macbook/macbook pro second hand as you can pick up a year or two old Pro for a lot less than a grand and it'll just be as capable a new system.

You can get similar cases like the OrigenAE M10, but it'll set you back £300+ just for the case.

The discounts are pretty nice. When I go on to the Apple Store using and Aston computer the price for a Macbook is £729.98

I just searched for mac mini and chose the 1st one i saw.

Newer one looks even cooler imo.

I wouldnt call myself a fanboy as such, but i do like Apple stuff.

Their OS has a lot of good ideas, but also does things backwards if your used to windows which i am.

Had a macbook for about 2 months and it got sold, couldn't get along with the OS. Was doing Cisco stuff at the time and some of the stuff i was using wouldnt work which i guess put me off.

If i was to get another Mac it would be a desktop and i'd run a PC as well

I like both machines but prefer my Macs. I've only used boot camp for VAGCOM on my pro.
