I've got an Icybox 4220B which I had running as RAID1 with 500GB WD disks. It's been eating up disks since I've had it, even after I changed the spin down time. I can't be arsed with it anymore and it's 18months old so I'm getting rid.

I was using it as a DNLA server, torrent client and backup storage so I'd like something else to do the same job. Preference is for multiple drives and RAID support as the back ups are important - all the kids photos, etc.

What have you got and what do you recommend?

Without a shadow of a doubt, Synology or Qnap if your looking for something reliable.

Alot of people will tell you to build your own, but its a PITA to manage and maintain.

I have a synology CS407 which currently holds 4x1TB disks in a raid 5 array (so 3TB of usage).
I have about 1 TB left, and when I need to upgrade, im going to consider looking at the latest QNAP/Synology range.

Just having a look at the QNAP looks like exactly the kind of thing I'm after. Cheers for that Bart. I'll let you know how I get on.

Oh i hate the IcyBox's, i had 3 of them as they kept going wrong.

In the end i bought a barebones machine, ram and processor for £200 and have a few 2tb harddisks running windows server 2003. The with uTorrent and the web interface it serves all my requirements.

I'd like it ideally to sit with my router/skybox/ps3 so the barebones box may be a bit too big for what I'm after. Saying that if you managed to get that done for £200 quid I might stick in a media PC with HDMI output straight to my PC. That way I can watch HD porn on the big screen while the wife is out. What did you get for £200?

Hmm having had a look I potentially lose RAID by doing that especially in a small form factor. FFS too many variables
