Can someone please explain in layman terms?

I'm looking at a laptop and it says - 'there's no eSATA and none of the USB ports are ‘sleep & charge' enabled' and just want to know what it means.

e SATA = external SATA, which is an external connection for attaching stuff like hard drives.

eSATA is to connect SATA devices, usually hard drives externally. Can also be DVD drives as well

Yeah you can because the external caddy just needs to have a E-SATA connection.
Most new ones come with USB or E-SATA connectivity. The quicker SATA connections are usually internal on your motherboard. All E-SATA means is an external port version of this so you can use an E-SATA cable outside to connect your external drive to.

No it just transfers quicker than USB.
If you've seen a decent laptop without then I'd not lose sleep over that feature.

Thats ok then. Just read a review with it saying sony were being stingy by not adding it and just wondered if it was something really important that i may need.

Most laptops will have a PCMCIA slot

eSATA really isnt that important and with new USB standards being released (i.e USB3), I think eSTATA will drop off the radar shortly.

eSATA transfers around 1.5GB-3GB per sec, while USB3 is more closer to 10GB
