Having thought through all the options available, I seem to have narrowed it down to a toss up between a Fiesta ST and a Mini Cooper S. It isnt as straight forward as which is best because for the same money, I can get a lot newer Fiesta than Mini but the pros and cons for both are pretty similar. So which would you have if you had to pick between the two cars below for the same money (based on age, mileage, comfort, drive, looks, warranty, etc) If it makes a difference to your opinion, I do 15k miles per year and my commute involves 25 miles motorway driving and 10 miles town driving each way every day

2005 05 reg Dark Silver Mini Cooper S with 30k miles

Cheers guys

Ah man Dreading the day I have to downgrade!

I think that shape Mini is meant to be bloody awful on fuel like you say... I've changed my mind, Fiesta for the newness, warranty and better MPG, sorry Also I guess it has useable back seats and boot

Mini, more tuneable, more reliable, handles better, better build quality and it wont depreciate much either.

The ford will loose you a shit load of money in the next 3 years and the mini will loose a grand at the most.

The mini is the better car of the 2

Anyone any idea on the difference between the MPG of the two? (not fake brochure figures, actual real life figures )

I have heard 35mpg is achievable in the Cooper S (bearing in mind at least 50% of my journeys will be motorway and stretched out journeys - 60 miles round trip commute each day)

i used to drive a 308 1.6 to coventry and back and i'd have to be carefull when going there and back as it would ahve run out of fuel on the way back if i caned it lol

used to try and blow up the 307 1.4 tho as i hated that car..

ST.

Mind you, if I was doing miles I'd be looking at a Zetec S TDCi but then I'm tight.

I think the inside of a Fiesta is a bit more practical too i.e. boot. Not sure though.

EDIT: After reading the thread and realising you're trying to save for a house and what not, if you're going to get rid of that nice Audi to save money, you may as well save money on a large scale and go for the TDCi or any decent mid powered diesel car.

The Mini is much better. Worrying about fuel economy is bottom of my list though.

Fiesta ST`s are slow there is no 2 ways about it, they are "warm" at best, I suppose they do handle well

Id rather the Mini, not in that colour though

ST arnt slow they are good for 150mph so not a slouch by any means mate, and ford tuning parts are relitively cheap compaired to most things,

all they need is a decent exhaust manifold, center and rear, and a sport cat and remap via flashing the ecu and you have a very nippy car.. interior isnt to bad, full or half leather's dash is typical ford aka plastic and cheepish looking but still far better than some higher end cars. they handle well and dont cost the earth to fix, also dont have the problem of if you run out of fuel they wont melt the spark plugs and nacker the coil's which the 1.6 engine in the mini,308,bmw's does...

The ST's are nice cars, but I prefer the mini from those two. But like someone said, you would surely be better getting a mid powered diesel to save money. Ibiza cupra the 1.9 tdi maybe? They are cracking moters and would eat those two for breakfast

The Mini is a faster car though, and if you did the same mods to both cars, the Mini would be MUCH faster.

still got the fun of cost to fix if the car needs a clutch mini's are stupidly expensive and the fact they melt plugs is not good..

tbh its down to personal tast's i cant stand the mini for a few reasons,

1 cost to fix
2 some of the reliability issues = not good
3 isnt a real mini

fiesta, cheaper to fix, and doesnt have many reliability problems (some niggeling ones like ive seen a few with a clicking cv and thats all i can remember)

and also look at the pole more people like the fiesta, but its down to personal tast.
