Just bought a P Reg 1.1 Punto off the lass i went to school with for £100.

It's MOT'd until March 2010, so plan is just to clean it up and eBay it.

Problem is...The Chassis number on the car doesn't match the log book. The new MOT system has flagged this up and it has a marker on it for a VIC check now.

The chassis number on the Floor next to drivers seat matches the Vin plate under the bonnet, the windscreen and every pane of glass around the car all tally but the log book is completely different.

No signs of tampering at all.

Mistake on log book or do i have a ringed P reg Punto

its not something to laugh about really as it could have been changed when it was nearly new. happens to quite a few cars according to the figures....

if it was me id try calling the dvla and explain the situation, to try and solve the problem....

if it is stolen/ringed whatever they will follow it up and the police will take it off you

Aye, every pane of glass has the same number as the vin plate, and stamped into chassis at drivers seat.

The numbers are miles apart

The stupid thing broke down on the way home too, it over heated.

I'll keep my 16v GLS thanks....

Once it's running again, it's going for a VIC check just down the road. I have the forms here to send off.

If i lose it, it's only £100 which ill prob get back from the lass i bought it off anyway.

Who on earth would ring this piece of shit, i do not know. It's a Povo Spec 1.1 55 Punto.

How different is it?

I'm guessing the plates are the same as the log book?

Probably a ringer mate, get the Reg from the chassis number on the car, main dealer should be able to do it for you.

If the car all matches but the paperwork is different my guess would be that the paperwork relates to a car which has been written off but the log book was never sent back, instead a car was stolen and had the plates changed and your friend has bought it without checking the numbers.

If this is the case then it technically belongs to the insurance company who paid out for the stolen one.

I was aware that the DVLA had marked it for a VIC check before i bought it yeah.

I checked all the numbers on the car and they all match. The problem is the log book, so i thought for £100 ill take a risk. If it comes back as a ringer, ill scrap it for £80 and she'll give me £20 back so i cant lose really.

You're from Newcastle, What did you expect?

Looks like you bought a ringer like, Just hope and pray its a mistake, But £100 is cheap for any car, That would have had some alarm bells ringing for me.

I went to school with this lass who i bought it from and i see her all the time so no alarm bells. She cant afford to run it after moving into her own flat.

She has been driving it for 3yrs and nothing has been flagged until now.

Reason being that each time it had been previously MOT's the tester just copied the no from the log book as it's quicker.

I actually bought it from Durham
