Check the plug to the coil. My mates started playing up. The car was running spot on until we swapped cams then it wouldn't start, There was very little spark.
After hours of swapping everything over from my XE we found a dodgey wire.
Worth a try.

Is it a dizzy engine?
On the dizzy engines there is a plug that goes into the coil base, Think it's 3 or 4 pin. If you pull back the rubber casing off the end of the plug and check the wiring and test the wiring with a circuit tester. It may not be your problem but only takes a few mins to work.

Have you pulled out a spark plug and checked the spark when cranking?

yea iv pulled out the spark plugs but theres no spark, the king lead from the coil to the dizzy isnt even sparking, so you mean the 4 pin plug that comes off the loom and plugs into the coil amplifier? and a red and blue wire come off that and onto the coil itself?

What colour is your FPR?
When you turn the ignition on but don't crank the engine does the ECU light come on?

Sounds like you have the newer style FPR, the original brown one was known to be faulty.
On my old Astra GSi the FPR went but worked sometimes, Way to tell if it would start was if the ECU came on, No light it wouldn't fire.

Not a definite way to spot if the FPR is fubar though.
You not got someone with same engine to swap bits over with?

Have you checked to see if you're getting 12v going to the coil?

Shame you can't drive it here. I have a full working dizzy engine here you could spend a day swapping parts over from.
Worked out on my mate Xe Vectra.

Sounds like a dodgy relay or wiring to me if it works sometimes then doesn't.
Try wiggling wires whilst someone turns the key.

I'm not too sure if the coil side is run via a relay but I don't think it is.
On my mates the wires were slightly broken up on 1 wire I think, Looked at it a few times and thought it was fine until we'd practically given up then I spotted it.
Check to see if the earth wire on the coil amp is getting a good connection. Could be a poor earth.
