When you tighten them by hand (not using air gun); how tight do you do them?

Curious, not asking for help.

torque settings are less important on steel wheels than alloy wheels.
i finger tighten, then use the breaker bar until the nut 'bites' without overtightening.

taking the post thread away at a slight tangent,,

i often wonder with regards to precise torque settings on rear wheel bolts.
if the car has rear drum brakes, the bolts are only attatched to the outer drum casing.
the outer drum casing is only attatched to the car by a finger tightened spiggot nut

iirc the garage I last got tyres fitted at had a torque wrench and out of interest I asked how tight they were going. He said he was putting them to 150n/M.

And a wheel came loose

edit to say: don't think it was because of the torque they came loose.

I meant to say, when I'm doing mine it's a case of just less than as tight as possible - hard to explain, but you know when they're tight enough anyway.

That's probably as bad as doing them up too loose though.

Exactly. I feel like sometimes if I go any further they're going to shear.

but the hub is bolted to the stub axle.

the wheel bolts pass through the drum into the hub.

its not the wheel bolts, bolting into the drum thats bolted to the hub with a grub screw.

I get it so it's lightly pinched, then lean on the breaker bar so they have a tight pinch too it. They don't need to be so tight you are jumping on bars

Plus the nut that the rear drum is held on with is a castle nut locked in on a split pin or lock wire.
