Im going to get a new boiler soon, next month or so if all goes to plan. Before I get someone out to have a look I want to have an idea what I can do.

Currently got a (system?) boiler, with hot water cylinder fed from a tank in the loft.

Its a 1 bed flat only 5 radiators. Showers electric.

I think I want to get a modern combi fitted but dont know how much work this will require.

Im a bit concerned how much work will be required to be done as ive got wooden floors & dont want to have to lift them.

Is it a case of blanking off or will I need major changes to pipework?

Do conversions on a daily basis, done one today that had every room laminate floor`d

firstly the tanks will come out of the loft as they will not be needed, the cylinder will come out too, the heating circuit to the cylinder can be blanked in the cylinder cupboard so no floors need to be took up there

your boiler needs 2x 22mm heating pipes, a 22mm gas main a 15mm water main and a 15mm hot water pipe comes out of the boiler

it makes it ten times easier if there is an outside wall the boiler can go on because the flu needs to go outside along with the condensate waste pipe and the pressure releif pipe

If you have a loft it is very likely that no floors will need to be touched as all pipework can be ran in the loft

if your existing rads are in good nick and your happy with them they can stay (as long as they are fitted with thermostatic valves )

where is your boiler at the minuite?

Boilers on the outside wall in the kitchen, its got 5 pipes running into it, one is gas, I assume the others are H/W & C/H flow & return. Cant remember the sizes, i'll check when im home.

Original Flue hole can be used, theres a press relief valve already there. Condensate trap runs floor level with a trap in it if & remember then goes out at floor level iirc? Not a problem!

Not a huge job then? Cost, I was thinking £1k - £1300...there abouts!?

ahh you already have pressurised heating then, and a condensing boiler

Piss easy job then

Its just a case of taking the Tank, Cylinder and associated pipework out and blanking the hot water heating circuit, providing the gas supply to your boiler is 22mm it will be very very straight forward

even if it isnt, running it in the loft isnt a hassle at all

I could do with a few of these types of jobs myself at the min, the ones we have had lately have been ball achers

Id say your estimate is bang on

Its not a condensing boiler ive got now, just a normal one, but its not too old. What I meant its no bother for running cond trap where it sits.

Not sure on gas supply, ive a feeling its 15mm, though the gas main comes in just at the other side of the kitcken & runs under the units so wouldnt be major to replace either!

Come to Scotland & fit mine

Also...what sort of boilers up to the job? Small 2nd floor flat, 5 rads, 2 hot taps, no shower. Doesnt require much heating....but I dont want to underspec it at the same time!

Id love to

dont worry if its 15mm anyway as it can always go in the loft, condensate pipes arnt a bother cause they are 15mm plastic, you can fish them anywhere cause there flexible

Kitchens are the best places for boilers to go!

sounds like you have a combi if there is 5 pipes running into it? maybe the old tank is redundant?

It was a shite job, only done it for a couple years then quit to persue a job on the rig's as a Process I&C Techician.

Good move aswell as ive heard the company I worked for has had to pay off most its staff. Unfortunatelly for them they only done new build housing. Ah well.

strange one then... never saw a systems boiler with 5 pipes running into it Colin

systems boilers usually have a circuit within the heating that heats the water of the cylinder indirectly. unless youve got a direct cylinder, not that common in glasgow though. maybe more through your way as i know the east has water pressure problems

Is it quite an old system?

he has a condensing system boiler with pressurised heating! the pipes will be

Heating - Gas - Cold Main Flexible Filling Loop - Heating - Pressure Relief

In that order
