You mean a network drive on a remote computer/server?

Your options are things like FTP or remote desktop.

Does the target computer have an always on internet connection?

Can do it if you have a VPN connection. The windows one will be surfice, but not too secure.

The HD wont have an external IP address....it'll have a private address (i.e. 192.168.x.x)

You'll need to create a firewall rule to direct incoming traffic on the FTP port (25 i think) to go direct to the internal IP of the Hard Drive

For example.

I have a server at home with an IP of 192.168.0.2. I want to connect to it using remote desktop connection software.

On my netgear router, i have to direct all traffic coming in to my router on port 3389 (the port remote desktop connection uses) to go to the IP of my server (192.168.0.2)

Hope that helps you in some way.

Yes it will, but theres big security implications. You need to do what Aaron said and port forward from the router to the external HDD

Thats why you do a route on your firewall to send all traffic coming in to your external IP (Class A) to the IP of your External HD (Class C) But only on the port you want (FTP Port)

On most routers you're able to choose which external IP's are allowed to use this rule....it blocks all others. So theres some security i suppose.

Or you could just DMZ the drive
