db is about loudness...u carnt say that a certain increment = twice as loud... without going into details its basically a measurment of air pressure or a resonant value...as sum1 said b4 its a curved line, rectangular hyperbola i think...

Not quite. The decibel is a comparison between two figures, what you're measuring and a reference figure. This reference figure is fixed for SPL (Sound Pressure Level) and is inserted into a logarithmic equation with the actual measurement to give a dB reading.

Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is defined using a reference which is approximately the intensity of a 1000 Hz sinusoid that is just barely audiable and this is therefore stated as being 0dB. Because the equation uses logarithms this fixes what the graph looks like. It is always logarithmic and always looks the same. Therefore, "loudness" can be measured in increments; as follows:

dB------------->Multiplication factor

0--------------->1
+3------------->Root 2
+6------------->2
+20----------->10
+60----------->1000

quote:

The test signal used for the analysis is "pink noise", which has an uniform level across all frequencies. It's similar to FM radio inter-station "hiss".

Pink noise actually contains uniform energy per octave. As the frequency increases the level decreases in frequency bands. This sounds deeper to the human hear, and is much more pleasant to listen to, than white noise which has equal energy at all frequencies and is the FM "hiss".

quote:

A LOT of people don't like the sound of a "perfect" RTA curve, myself included. It's just too flat for me. No bass, and a lot of midrange

This is because the human ear starts to roll off at about 100 Hz and has a resonant peak at around 3/3.5 kHz. Any sound at this frequncy will be amplified slightly by the ear canal unless another sound is masking it.

Hope this helps.

btw SQ= Sound Quality whereas SQL=mix of SQ and SPL, normally a SQ system that can hit above 148-150dB.

I beg to differ.....

Most SQ systems cant hit 135Db,

and SQL to me means an SQ setup upfront, with a stupid amount of bass.

135dB is pish, any half decent system [edited], be it spl or sq, if it has a decent sub and decent amp/amps to drive it can easily hit 135dB.

Ask an IASCA SQ competitor. The SQ cars arent built to hit higher than 135db.

Which is why in the points scoring you get 10 extras points if you can hit over 135

Basically, an amp gives power to the speakers. A speaker has a resistance. If the speaker configuration shows a 2ohm load to the amp, it will produce that much power stated.

World reckon is 170 something i think? dunno exactly.

But believe me, it takes £££££ to get anywhere near that high. And its not allways amount of subs, that hit high Dbs. Also, putting them in a massive space, will probably be a waste of time.

RMS & Max Power...:

RMS ratings are universal accross the scale. RMS is a sorta universal way of measuring power of an amp.

Max power is basically a figure which companys make up, so for example an amp which is 300WRMS/1000Watt Max is exactly the same as an amp which is 300WRMS/ 500W Max Power..

shittin hell that will be loud! but if its its run in a mono block form wont u need a 10000 watt sub? or am i under the illusion that the sub wattage has to be higher than the amps that is powering it?

one last thing,i no that an rc gives signal to the amps and all that,but wat exactly does rca stand for?

ok but tanx that clears that bit up but if u have a amp that is more powerful than the sub your running wont it blo it.(eg. a 1000 watt amp running a 500 watt sub)

im asking all these questions because next year im getin a job (for work experience) with an ice company called ice tronix. and i want to no sum stuff b4 i get there

no, just keep the gains down, and determin the limit of the sub on those settings, eg. the volume at which it starts to distort, make sure u keep it below that volume.
