Hi im carl and this is my first post.

I am almost 17 and currently looking for my first car.

I have came across a 2000 corsa b club 1.2 16v with a service history and 55000 miles. It is black and has a factory spoiler and alloys and the car is going to recieve a full service before i get it. the best bit, i think, is that the guy is looking £1200 for it. He owns a mechanics garage and they also sell some cars.

What should i look out for when viewing the car and also do you reckon this is a fair price??

Your replies are appreciated.

Cheers

well its not bad, for £1200 plus a bit more you could buy a corsa C which is more modern

Ive had a little look and tbh i actually prefer the shape of the corsa b.

Also as i am only 16 my funds are stretched even in order to get this one at 1200 quid - and its black, which is relativly rare compared to all the blue, red and silver ones!!!

When i go to view the car - hopefully tomorrow - what should i look out for??

rust spots, on the boot and doors.

from what you've said its got fairly low mileage, just check the obvious ones like tyres suspension etc.

These engines have cam chains from what i have heard so i shouldn't see many problems from that side of things.

the only problem i can see is the fact that it has no centre hubs in the alloy wheels.

are these hard to obtain??

Not really.

And by what you're describing, that is an SXi. So it has a Sport interior, spoiler, colour coded mirrors, 14" alloys and some other stuff. Would be a great first car - not bad on insurance, but got some looks to start with.

£1200 sounds like a bargain imho get some form of HPi check done though

Oh, and don't approach him on your own, so he doesn't try and fool you - take your dad or something

mate

Just check its body work for rust and crash damage.

Other then that just the usual stuff like the colour of the oil and no oil in the coolent etc.

Maybe check to make sure it doesnt smoke or anything.

If its having a service before you get it everything else should be spot on

Check the Engine managment light isnt on as well and that it comes on and goes off when you start the car. ie it hasent been removed

The car is a club special edition - it has the silly logo on the door and the special blue and grey seat design. Though it does have the 14" alloys and spoiler.

What happens if there is oil in the coolant or if the engine mangement light stays on.

I have to take my girlfriend out as a late valentines day gift and have to go now as she is practically screaming at me to leave 'because we have reservation for 5.30... blah, blah, blah....- bloody women!

But i will be back on at about 11 o'clock to check the replies.

Cheers for the help lads.

Oil in the coolant is basicall head-gasket is on the way out or has gone ie. pricey to fix.

Check for a resonable insurance quote aswell, and being nearly 17 insurance for yourself is going to be VERY pricey, so hunt around for a good price, though regardless it will be expensive.

But check for rust inparticular on the window seals, door pillar and arches etc as these are prone, as with any car really, but some are better than others so.

But good luck with the buy m8

some of the 1.2 16v are know to have trouble with sensors, its not usually major just a niggle. Some people tend to take the engine mangament bulb out to hide things. so just check it comes on goes off again when you start the engine.

Other then that it shouldnt come on

Make sure it pulls smoothly all the way through the rev range. Some sensors are pretty common for going on these engines. Mainly Mass Air Flow which causes it to run rough from cold and can be quite juddery when going through the rev range.

Other than that just look at the common things, I had a Club as my first car and it was a great little motor.

Well hope fully it will be good for me as well.

are the MAF sensors expensive to fix if it fails?

From what i have read, the head gaskets seem to be the most common problem.

Am i right in assuming this?

Insurance wise i got a quote yesterday for £1137.58 from Quinn Direct - and i live in Northern Ireland!!

Althought i did get a quote from AA for just under £8000 pounds - and thats not a typing error - they actually quoted me just under eight thousand pounds.

For an 8 year old corsa - ridiculous!!!!!

I have been told that the 1.2 16v uses a timing chain.

almost certain its a chain mate, shouldn't give you much problem but I hear they can get noisy after a while, I imagine its not major to fix though

Thats what i thought.

Ive heard these go on for like 150k.

So i wont get changed un less it gets noisy.

My uncle had a fabia mpi which had a timing chain and it made a really loud clicking noise but it never broke, even after 120,000 miles of really hard town driving.

Well that car was actually very nearly mine but i turned it down due to many mechanical problems and much advice from all my mates which went a little bit like, ' ...your not going to drive a f*****g skoda...your not an old cheap skate man just yet...get a corsa, a 206 or a polo, not a skoda pretending to be a polo...'

So i took there advice and here i am today!

I was just wondering, i would really like leather in my car and is a calibra conversion easy?

Is it just a matter of bolting the front and rear seats in???
