my mates got a e46 330ci sport and another mate works for bmw and gets a decent 3 series every year or so.

there heavy cars so the only small engined one i would even consider would be a 320d but they cost a few k more, 330d goes like stink but again costs a couple grand more than the 330ci which is around the same pace so your going to need to do alot of milage over the years for the diesel version to be worth it.

model after the e46, e90 perhaps 325 coupe was lovely in every way but lacked the extra oopmh

people aslo comment on lack on feeling in the steering and delayed throttle response on the e46 pre facelift.

i know your after a 1.6 but cant help but think you will regret it, i would love an e46 330ci but if it was my cash i think i would save a few grand grand and get the mondeo st220, it doesnt have the badge( good and bad points)newer and better equipped for the money. most importantly just as fast on the road after 40mphish

LOL @ 316, at least get a 320d or something. Still, even though it's been to the moon and back, interior and wheels look smart.

Buy something else, wait for your no claims bonus to build up over the next couple of years then buy one with a decent engine. Seems daft buying the crappy engined one just cos its got a BMW badge on it when you could probably get something better elsewhere for now.

Its like people that buy 1.6 engined A3s, they are only buying it for the badge when they could get something better elsewhere If your going to do it, do it properly!

Not worth it unless your going for a diesel or a 320 MIN.

There many better alternatives. Have a look at a VW Golf, Older audi A3/4, Seat Ibiza/Leon.

My Ibiza has many more toys that than, less miles, 130 diesel engine and wasnt that much more expensive. I can afford to insure it with 0 Year NCB and a Claim - fully comp that is.

I would look at the E36's rather than the E46's if you want to get more toys for your money. And they are cheaper to insure aswell.

You will struggle to get a decent low mileage e46 cheap ( 5k?)
Get an E36 as they are cheaper and the parts are easy to get ahold of.
I have an e36 - 323i. Now thats running 200bhp but its only just as fast as my old 106 gti from 0-60 (which is what most young lads want in a car), obviously the top end is loads better in the bmw ( great for motorway driving).
If you want reliable, get a 6cylinder bmw as they are chain driven.

That e46 is nice but it has a high mileage, so its more likely to have bit breaking on you and if youve already bust your budget to get one. you probably wont have any money to fix it.
